Impedance measurement

Impedance measurement is a modern and accurate method for studying the functionality of the middle ear. First of all, thanks to this procedure, it is possible to detect damage, inflammation in the ear and obtain complete data on the degree of audibility. The name “impedansometry” includes several diagnostic tests: testing the function of the auditory tube, tympanometry and acoustic reflexometry.

The procedure takes about 15-30 minutes and provides accurate information about the condition of the middle ear structure.

INDICATIONS FOR IMPEDANMETRY

  • frequent otitis media;
  • chronic diseases of the nasopharynx and auditory tube;
  • hearing loss;
  • catarrhal otitis media;
  • exudative otitis media;
  • adhesive otitis media;
  • otosclerosis;
  • selection of a hearing aid.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO IMPEDANMETRY

  • fresh injury to the auditory analyzer;
  • violation of the integrity of the eardrum;
  • acute inflammatory diseases of the ear.

HOW IS IMPEDANMETRY DONE?

Impedance measurement is carried out without the use of special medications on an outpatient basis using a special device – an impedance meter.

The procedure is painless, takes a few minutes, and does not require prior preparation. The ENT doctor conducts an examination during the appointment. He sits the patient in a chair and, one by one, inserts a probe from the device into the ear, through which the sound from the speaker is conducted to the eardrum. It houses a microphone that picks up sound vibrations reflected from the membrane.

WHO CAN CARRY OUT IMPEDANOMETRY

This diagnostic procedure can be performed on all patients without age restrictions, as well as children of all ages, in particular newborns. There is no risk in taking an impedance test.

Impedance testing in combination with other hearing diagnostic methods makes it possible to identify hearing impairments in children at an early stage, which is a fairly pressing issue today.
